Introduction, emerging and history
Hi,
Let me introduce myself. My name is Frank Zorge.
Transferring used materials or waste into objects of art is not the first thought in art-making. But there are several advantages.
- materials used in my objects are being reused. Some of the parts would have been thrown away anyway. Now they start a new life as an art object. This kind of art making keeps the environment clean and spares commodities. It supports the ideas of preserving the environment for future generations and turn wast into art.
- used materials and waste are relative cheap. Most of them come from second hand stores or are gifts from friends and business relations. Some of them even are recovered as garbage from litter cans or waste containers.
- with used materials and waste (specially metal) you need special skills to turn it into art. The parts often strongly differ from each other in composition and size. So you need to make special (internal) constructions to connect the parts. It is like a complex puzzle, and the fact that they are made of  metal makes it even more difficult to handle but appealing.

Emerging
For the time being I work with (re)used or wasted metal, steel, chrome, etc. materials, these materials are everlasting. In time I will be going to use wood and glass for the objects of art.

Inspiration for the shape of objects depends mostly on the materials I collect. The first few objects had the shape of animals, more or less. That's not a coincidence. From the beginning I had to train myself in looking at wasted materials in a certain way, discovering the art value that is inclosed. Making these objects is much easier when you have a kind of subject and shape in your mind as a guidance. Fantasy animals meet these critiria quit well.

But later on the objects became more human just letting my imagination go his own way. For now the objects have an organic shape, with contrasts in materials like metal, leather and horn. And their composition maintain a perfect balance of attractive design and colors, but also somewhat disturbing shapes and looks.

It takes me about 4 to 5 weeks to build an object. In between making the objects I try to collect as much materials and parts as I can.

People wonder how I get these special shapes from the materials I collect. Well, at first I expose some of the metal object on a bench. I choose the most extreme shapes I can find in my collection of objects. There is always an object that attracks my attention most. I start with that object en arrange some other objects around it. By fit and measure I try to build a recognizable shape. I allways try to take in account the posibility to connect the parts I am using together from the start. And suddenly I see serveral posibilities. But it takes a lot of time before the main shape is formed, usually 2 weeks. In the next week I try to connect all the parts, with nuts and bolts, or glued together. In the last of the four weeks I add as many details as possible. At one point I feel the object is ready. I leave it as it is.

History
My inspiration for this line of art emerged in Paris, at the beginning of 2007. In January I have spent 6 days in Paris. I have already been there about 5 or 6 times the last couple of years, always getting inspired for my work on one way on another.

One day during this holiday I was drifting along the streets of Paris at the end of an afternoon, admiring buildings, looking in shops and at people in the streets. On more then one occasion the past days I entered expositions of art work, and this time I entered the `Espace d' animation des Blancs Manteau´ in the Rue Vieille du Temple . On this exposition, ´La Metamorphose des materiaux´ (transformation of materials) the crme -de-la-crme of used materials art work were exposing their work.

Cataloque
I became very exited. Their idea of transferring materials into art work was appealing. I carefully studied all objects. Very bad luck that day was that both battery-packs of the digital camera I carried were empty, so I could not take any pictures. Even buying an object wasn't an option on this last day. I bought the catalogue in stead.... (this sardine can)

And back home I visited most of the websites of the exposing artists. Now the idea of transferring waste materials into art/objects myself was born (again thanks to A). At home I started to collect the proper materials for an experiment. In my workshop I have composed the first object: ZETA.
